The face of retail continues to change in Australia

We’ve seen it on the subway in Tokyo, but now, in Australia, you can go shopping with your smart phone at Sports Girl without actually setting foot inside the store. The outside of the store has giant photos of selected products with QR codes on them. Scan the items with your phone and add them to your cart.

It’s novel, and it has a limited capacity to only showcase a small number of goods, and the constant changes in fashion means this would be an expensive way to sell, but when you’re the first ones doing it, it’s a novelty and attracts attention.

Where I think this technology has real merit is where I first saw it, supermarkets. Can you imagine waiting at the train station, doing your grocery shopping, and then being able to pull up outside the supermarket and getting your groceries out of the refrigerated locker that contains all your items?
